Description
Medium Voltage (MV) Aerial Bunched Cables (ABC) are specialized overhead power lines consisting of multiple insulated conductors bundled together, typically rated for voltages between 1 kV and 33 kV. Unlike traditional bare wire systems, these cables are fully insulated and often supported by a high-strength messenger wire to improve safety and reliability in crowded or difficult terrains.Technical SpecificationsMV ABC systems are designed to withstand extreme environmental stress while maintaining electrical integrity. Voltage Grades: Common ratings include 6.35/11 kV, 12.7/22 kV, and 19/33 kV. Conductor Material: Typically made of Class 2 stranded circular aluminum or aluminum alloy to provide high conductivity with reduced weight. Insulation: Most MV ABC cables use Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE), which allows for a maximum continuous operating temperature of 90°C and short-circuit temperatures up to 250°C. Screening: Unlike low-voltage variants, MV cables often feature metallic screening (copper wire or tape) and semi-conductive layers (conductor and insulation screens) to manage electrical stress and prevent potential charge buildup. Outer Sheath: Typically protected by a High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or PVC jacket that is UV-resistant and black for weatherproofing. Core Construction & ComponentsA typical MV ABC assembly includes three main insulated phase cores twisted around a central support. Phase Conductors: Three cores insulated and screened, often identified by ridges (one, two, and three) for easy phase recognition. Messenger Wire: A high-strength load-bearing wire made of galvanized steel or aluminum alloy that supports the weight of the entire bundle over long spans. Optional Cores: Some designs include smaller insulated conductors (e.g., 16mm² or 25mm²) for street lighting. Key Benefits Increased Safety: Insulated conductors eliminate the risk of accidental electrocution from touching live wires and prevent short circuits caused by falling trees or birds. Reliability: Disturbance and faults are reported to occur five to ten times less frequently in ABC lines compared to traditional open-wire lines. Theft Reduction: The bundled, insulated design makes illegal power tapping (theft) much more difficult and obvious to detect. Urban & Rural Flexibility: Ideal for narrow urban lanes where space is limited or for hilly/forested regions where tree trimming is difficult.
