There are no buttons to press. Instead, an elevator operator sits on a small stool and uses a lever to shift the metal box up and down. It's a manually operated elevator, among the last of its kind in Chicago.Passenger elevator means an elevator used primarily to carry persons other than the operator and persons necessary for loading and unloading. A motor at the top of the shaft turns a sheave—essentially a pulley—that raises and lowers cables attached to the cab and a counterweight. Gears connect the motor and sheave in slower systems. Faster elevators are gearless; the sheave is coupled directly.
