This drilling machine is capable of drilling holes up to 12.5 mm diameter in steel. The bench drill is used for drilling holes through materials including a range of woods, plastics and metals. It is normally bolted to a bench so that it cannot be pushed over and that larger pieces of material can be drilled safely. The larger version of the machine drill is called the pillar drill. Bench drills are designed to be bolted down to a workbench and they enable components and materials to be drilled with much greater accuracy and precision than can usually be achieved with a handheld drill. Drilling is a material-removing or cutting process in which the tool uses a drill bit to cut a hole of circular cross-section in solid materials.
