Definition: A BSC is an enclosed, ventilated laboratory workspace for safely working with materials contaminated with (or potentially contaminated with) pathogens. A HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter is used to remove particles (such as bacteria, viruses, pollen, etc.) The goals of the Biological Safety Program, referenced in this manual as the Biosafety Program, are to protect laboratory workers, the public, and the environment from potentially hazardous biological agents.
