Description
A Brass Sheet (thin) and Brass Plate (thick) are flat-rolled forms of brass, an alloy made of Copper and Zinc. In the industry, the distinction is usually based on thickness: material under 6mm is a "sheet," while 6mm and above is a "plate." 1. Material Composition The "Gold" Ratio: Most sheets are 70/30 (70% copper, 30% zinc), known as Cartridge Brass. This mix provides the best balance of strength and the ability to be bent or shaped without cracking. Color: It has a bright, yellow-gold appearance. Over time, it develops a natural "patina" (darkens to a deep bronze/brown) unless polished or lacquered. 2. Key Properties Non-Magnetic: Unlike steel, brass won't stick to a magnet, making it ideal for electrical enclosures and sensitive electronics. Low Friction: It is naturally "slippery," which is why thick plates are used for wear strips and gears. Bacteriostatic: Like copper, brass naturally kills bacteria on its surface, making it popular for hospital push-plates and door handles. Acoustics: It has excellent resonant qualities (used for musical instruments and high-end speaker base plates). 3. Common Grades C260 (Cartridge Brass): The standard for sheets. Very "springy" and easy to fold, weld, or cold-work. C360 (Free-Machining Brass): The standard for plates. Contains lead, making it a dream to drill or CNC machine, but it is brittle and will crack if you try to bend it. C464 (Naval Brass): High-strength plate designed for marine environments; it won't corrode in salt water.
