LPS Cast Iron Pipe Earthing Electrode (3 m × 114 mm) – Technical Specification The LPS Cast Iron Pipe Earthing Electrode is a robust and durable grounding solution designed for use in lightning protection systems (LPS) and heavy-duty electrical installations. It ensures effective dissipation of lightning and fault currents into the earth, thereby protecting equipment, structures, and personnel from electrical hazards. The electrode shall be manufactured from high-grade cast iron, known for its excellent mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. The standard dimensions of the electrode shall be 114 mm outer diameter and 3000 mm (3 meters) length, making it suitable for high-capacity grounding applications. The wall thickness shall typically range between 6 mm to 10 mm, ensuring structural integrity during installation and long-term service. The pipe shall be uniform in shape, free from cracks, blowholes, and manufacturing defects. Both ends of the pipe shall be properly finished, and one end may be tapered or provided with a driving cap to facilitate easy insertion into the ground. The electrode shall be capable of withstanding mechanical stress during driving or installation in hard soil conditions. The earthing electrode shall provide reliable electrical conductivity and shall be capable of achieving an earth resistance value of 1 ohm or less, depending on soil resistivity and installation conditions. Due to its larger diameter and mass, the 114 mm cast iron pipe offers improved surface contact with soil, resulting in better current dissipation and stable performance. A suitable earthing terminal arrangement shall be provided on the electrode. This may include a GI or MS flat strip (e.g., 50×6 mm or higher) securely clamped or welded to the pipe. The connection shall be designed to ensure low resistance and long-term reliability. Nut-bolt arrangements with anti-corrosion treatment shall be used for connecting the earthing conductor. Installation shall be carried out by placing the electrode vertically in a pit or by driving it into the ground up to a depth of approximately 3 meters. The pit diameter shall be sufficient (typically 200–300 mm) to allow proper placement and backfilling. The surrounding area shall be backfilled with alternate layers of charcoal and salt or other conductive materials to reduce soil resistivity and improve earthing performance. Adequate watering arrangements shall be provided to maintain soil moisture. The electrode is suitable for use in lightning protection systems, substations, industrial plants, transformer yards, DG sets, and large commercial installations where high fault current dissipation is required. It performs well in a variety of soil conditions, including dry and rocky terrains. The expected service life of the cast iron earthing electrode shall be 10 to 20 years, depending on environmental conditions and maintenance practices. Periodic inspection and watering are recommended to maintain optimal performance. The complete earthing system shall be designed, installed, and tested in accordance with IS 3043 and relevant guidelines for lightning protection and grounding systems.
