Cement board is most commonly sold in 3 x 5-foot sheets and in thicknesses ranging from 1/4 inch to 5/8 inch. A 3 x 5 panel of 1/4-inch cement board weighs about 30 pounds; a 1/2-inch sheet, 36 to 44 pounds. A cement board is a combination of cement and reinforcing formed into sheets, of varying thickness that are typically used as a tile backing board. Cement board is used as a backer material for installing stone, brick or tile. It's also called a cementitious backer unit or CBU. Because cement backer boards are porous, , grout, and mortar adhere well to it. Cement backer board is mainly used as a sub-surface for tiling. Cement backer board is often used as a tile base on plywood or OSB subfloor. Cement backer board on concrete as a subfloor or underlayment is usually not recommended or needed.
