Description

Coating Pan: A Brief Description A Coating Pan is a piece of industrial equipment, primarily used in the pharmaceutical and confectionery industries, to apply a thin, uniform layer of liquid coating (solution or suspension) onto a batch of solid core materials, such as tablets, capsules, pellets, candies, or nuts. Core Function and Purpose The main function is to tumble the product while simultaneously spraying a coating solution and drying the layer using warm air. The coating serves several crucial purposes: Pharmaceuticals: Protection: Shields the active drug ingredient from light, moisture, and air, increasing shelf life. Taste Masking: Covers up the unpleasant taste or odor of the drug. Functional Coating: Provides enteric coating (prevents dissolution in the stomach) or a sustained-release mechanism. Aesthetics: Improves appearance and color for branding and identification. Confectionery/Food: Applying sugar layers, chocolate, or glazing agents to candies, nuts, and seeds. Working Principle Tumbling: Tablets (or other cores) are loaded into a large, rotating drum or pan (often stainless steel) that is mounted at an angle. The rotation causes the cores to gently tumble and mix, creating a continuously moving bed. Spraying: A fine, atomized mist of the coating solution (containing polymers, solvents, colorants, etc.) is precisely sprayed onto the surface of the tumbling bed of products. Drying: Simultaneously, a controlled flow of hot air is directed through the pan to evaporate the solvent from the coating solution, ensuring the layer dries quickly and the coated products do not stick together.
