Two common types of field ditches are the single ditch and the W ditch (also called the twin or double ditch). The single ditch is used where spoil can be moved and spread in low areas of the field without obstructing flow into the ditch.In a singular pipe drainage system, each field pipe drain discharges into an open collector drain. In a composite pipe drainage system, the field pipe drains discharge into a pipe collector, which in turn discharges into an open main drain.These ditches receive water from subsurface drain tiles and over land (surface) agricultural runoff. Currently, the primary function of drainage ditches is to remove excess water quickly without any treatment. Drainage ditches discharge large quantities of N and P into creeks, streams and rivers.
