Description

DM (demineralised) water plants are systems used to carry out industrial water treatment. To be more precise, the DM plant remove dissolved solids or minerals from process streams and feed water. These plants remove minerals using any one of the following procedures: Deionisation.A DM Water System produces mineral free Water by operating on the principles of ion exchange, Degasification, and polishing. Demineralized Water System finds wide application in the field of steam, power, process, and cooling. Raw Water is passed via two small polystyrene bead filled (ion exchange resins) beds.DM plant consists of cation and anion exchange units followed by a mixed bed unit. Usually, cation exchange units are regenerated by sulphuric acid. A few industries use hydrochloric acid for regeneration. The anion exchange units are regenerated by sodium hydroxide. The biggest difference between the two is that reverse osmosis uses a semipermeable membrane to filter water, while deionization uses ion exchange resins to replace minerals and contaminants with hydrogen and hydroxyl ions. Many research studies have found a causal relationship between drinking demineralised water, a product of the reverse osmosis process and various health risks. Though high quantities of the minerals can be harmful, low quantities or lack of these minerals is not great news for one's health either.
