Description
A Fire Hose Pipe is a heavy-duty, flexible high-pressure conduit used to transport water or fire-retardant foam to extinguish fires. Because these hoses must perform under extreme conditions, they are designed with a "lay-flat" structure—meaning they are flat when empty for easy storage on reels or in cabinets and expand to a circular shape only when pressurized.
Modern fire hoses use a composite design to balance extreme pressure resistance with portability:
Inner Liner: A smooth, watertight tube made of EPDM rubber, Polyurethane (PU), or Nitrile. A smooth interior is critical to reduce "friction loss," ensuring water pressure doesn't drop significantly over long distances. Reinforcement Jacket: The "muscle" of the hose. This is a woven outer layer made of high-tenacity Polyester or Nylon. Single Jacket: Lighter and more flexible; used for indoor "Rack and Reel" cabinets. Double Jacket: An extra layer of woven fabric provides superior abrasion resistance and higher burst pressure; used by professional fire departments. External Coating: Some hoses are impregnated with a Hypalon or Nitrile coating (often red or yellow) to protect against chemicals, heat, and oil.
Type Typical Diameter Primary Use Attack Hose $1.5"$ to $2.5"$ Maneuverable lines used by firefighters to enter buildings. Supply Hose (LDH) $3"$ to $6"$ Large Diameter Hoses used to move water from hydrants to the fire truck. Booster Hose $0.75"$ to $1"$ Rigid rubber hoses kept on reels for small "mop-up" or grass fires. Suction Hose $3"$ to $6"$ Hard, wire-reinforced hoses used to "draft" water from lakes or pools.
