Description

A Fire Sprinkler Hose (commonly called a Flexible Sprinkler Drop or Whip) is a specialized, high-pressure assembly used to connect the main rigid water pipes (branch lines) to the individual fire sprinkler heads. These are primarily used in suspended (drop) ceilings in offices, hospitals, and schools because they allow the sprinkler head to be positioned perfectly in the center of a ceiling tile without the labor-intensive cutting and threading of hard steel pipe. A standard flexible drop is not just a hose; it is a complete kit consisting of: Flexible Hose: A corrugated stainless steel tube (AISI 304) that can be braided or unbraided. Inlet Nipple: A 1" threaded fitting that connects to the main water branch line. Outlet Reducer: A fitting at the other end (usually 1/2" or 3/4") where the sprinkler head is screwed in. Mounting Bracket & Square Bar: A steel support system that attaches to the ceiling's T-bar grid. This ensures the sprinkler stays at the correct height and won't "push up" into the ceiling when water pressure is activated. Feature Braided Hose Unbraided (Corrugated) Construction SS hose wrapped in wire mesh. Exposed corrugated SS tube. Pressure Resistance Higher; the braid prevents expansion. Standard; relies on tube wall thickness. Vibration Better at dampening high-flow vibration. More susceptible to vibration noise. Flexibility Slightly stiffer but more durable. More flexible; easier to bend in tight spaces. Speed of Installation: Can be installed in 10–15 minutes, whereas a rigid pipe "arm-over" can take over an hour of measuring and threading. Ceiling Creep & Settlement: As buildings settle or ceilings sag over time, the flexible hose moves with the ceiling. Rigid pipes remain fixed, which can cause the sprinkler head to eventually protrude or become recessed. Seismic Safety: In earthquake-prone areas, flexible drops allow the ceiling and piping to move independently, preventing the sprinkler heads from snapping off. Cost-Efficiency: While the material cost is higher than steel pipe, the labor savings often make it the cheaper option for large-scale commercial projects. Max Working Pressure: Typically 175 to 200 PSI (13.7 bar). Max Temperature: Rated for ambient temperatures up to 150°C (300°F). Bend Radius: Usually a minimum of 3" to 8" (76mm to 200mm) depending on the brand and UL/FM listing. Standards: Must be UL Listed or FM Approved and installed according to NFPA 13, 13D, or 13R standards.
