Description
LPS GI Earthing Electrode (3 m × 60 mm) – Technical Specification The LPS GI Earthing Electrode is designed to provide efficient and reliable grounding for electrical installations and lightning protection systems. This electrode ensures safe dissipation of fault and lightning currents into the earth, maintaining system stability and protecting equipment and personnel. The earthing electrode shall be manufactured from high-quality Galvanized Iron (GI), using mild steel as the base material. The standard size of the electrode shall be 60 mm outer diameter and 3000 mm (3 meter) length, with a wall thickness ranging from 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm. The pipe shall be hot-dip galvanized to provide superior corrosion resistance. The galvanization coating thickness shall be minimum 80 microns, ensuring durability and long service life even in harsh soil environments. The construction of the electrode may be of single pipe type or pipe-in-pipe / strip-in-pipe design, depending on project requirements. In enhanced designs, an internal GI strip (e.g., 25×3 mm or higher) may be provided to improve conductivity and current dissipation. The electrode shall be robust enough to withstand mechanical stress during installation and operation. The earthing electrode shall be capable of achieving an earth resistance value of 1 to 5 ohms, depending on soil resistivity, moisture content, and installation practices. It shall be suitable for dissipating high fault and lightning currents typically associated with Lightning Protection Systems (LPS) and electrical networks. The electrode performance shall remain stable under varying climatic conditions, including dry and semi-arid soils. The electrode shall be provided with a suitable GI terminal connection, typically in the form of a GI strip (e.g., 40×6 mm or 50×6 mm) securely welded or bolted to the pipe. The terminal shall have drilled holes (8–12 mm diameter) for connection with earthing conductors using nut-bolt arrangements, ensuring low-resistance electrical continuity. Installation shall be carried out by placing the electrode vertically in an earthing pit of approximately 3 meters depth and suitable diameter (150–300 mm). The pit shall be backfilled with alternate layers of charcoal and salt or suitable conductive material to reduce soil resistivity and enhance performance. Proper compaction shall be ensured during installation. The electrode is suitable for use in lightning protection systems (LPS), residential buildings, commercial complexes, industrial installations, substations, transformers, and DG sets. It provides a reliable and cost-effective earthing solution for moderate to high-load applications. The expected service life of the GI earthing electrode shall be 5 to 10 years, depending on soil conditions and environmental factors. Periodic watering may be required to maintain optimum moisture levels and ensure consistent performance. The complete earthing system shall be designed, installed, and tested in accordance with IS 3043 and relevant guidelines for electrical safety and grounding systems.
