A hoist is a device used for lifting or lowering a load by means of a drum or lift-wheel around which rope or chain wraps. It may be manually operated, electrically or pneumatically driven and may use chain, fiber or wire rope as its lifting medium.A hoist is a device used to lift or move material. The lifting force is provided by a drum (or wheel) on which wraps a rope (wire or fibre) or a chain.In laymen's terms and paraphrasing from their respective ANSI Codes; a construction elevator transports general site personnel and or materials to various levels, a material hoist transports material only, and finally, a transport platform moves material with a limited number of trained personnel.
