Description

Hyperextension refers to a joint that has a greater than normal range of motion, and most commonly occurs within the elbow and knee. Joints have a predetermined range of motion available, and that range is determined by muscle length, bone size, cartilage and ligaments, A hyperextension injury occurs when a joint is moved past its normal angle of extension. For example, this may happen to the elbow during sports, often when "punching air" or practicing one's swing in tennis. The injury known as "tennis elbow" is, in fact, a form of hyperextension injury.Hyperextension of the knee, also known as “genu recurvatum” occurs when the leg excessively straightens at the knee joint, putting stress on the knee structures and the back of the knee joint. It's possible that an injury can damage one or multiple ligaments in your knee, including during a hyperextension. Severe hyperextensions are common causes of ACL and MCL tears. However, not all hyperextensions lead to ligament tears, and it's possible to strain or tear ligaments without hyperextending your knee. The Reverse Hyperextension is an effective exercise compared to the Back Extension in terms of muscular activity. The main difference to remember is probably at the level of range of motion : the Reverse Hyper can reduce lumbar flexion while increasing the range of motion in the hip
