The term 'sterilized' is used to describe milk that has been packed in airtight containers and subjected to temperatures in excess of 100 °C. The severe heat treatment of the milk results in a caramelized, burnt flavor and a brown color. The product is usually packed before heat treatment. Sterilization destroys all microorganisms on the surface of an article or in a fluid to prevent disease transmission associated with the use of that item.
