Precooling Unit

Precooling is a process which improves the performance of a unit by reducing the compressor load and the head pressure. Precooling takes place in heat exchangers and can improve performance because the cooler air intake reduces the compressor load and the head pressure.Precooling essentially refers to rapid heat transfer from commodity to cooling medium. Forced-air cooling is a preferred method in citrus and prompt precooling inhibits the growth of decay causing microorganisms, restricts enzymatic and respiratory activities, inhibits water loss, and reduces ethylene production.Since the rate of respiration is influenced by temperature , precooling to remove the field heat before storage will reduce the respiration rate and hence deterioration will decline accordingly. For example reduction in temperature of 9.50C in grapes halved the rate of respiration and doubled their keeping quality.
