Industrial water softeners treat your water for industrial use by removing hardness from the water using resin. The resin acts as industrial hard water treatment and replaces the hardness in the water with salt (brine) that is regenerated periodically.Home water softeners, also called ion exchange units, are appliances that remove calcium, magnesium, and other minerals from drinking water. Resin beads inside the softener trap the calcium and magnesium and exchange them for sodium or potassium.On a small scale, chemicals used for softening include ammonia, borax, calcium hydroxide (slaked lime), or trisodium phosphate, usually in conjunction with sodium carbonate (soda ash).
