Star Marble Jali

The Star Marble Jali from White Gold Marbles is a six foot by eight foot screen carved from a single slab of Makrana White Marble. It is forty millimetres thick and weighs enough to stay in place through storms and summer heat. The stone comes from a quarry in Rajasthan, India plus its crystals are so fine that the surface looks uniformly white. Stonemasons cut a repeating star pattern right through the slab. Each opening is a four pointed star - light passes through the holes and throws sharp outlines on the floor or ground behind it. Air also moves freely - a room or veranda stays cooler but anyone on the other side sees only the pattern, not the people. You can set the panel against a garden wall, across a temple porch or in front of an office façade. Its thickness stops rain from cracking it and keeps the edges crisp for decades. No steel frame is hidden inside - the marble alone carries its own weight. Fix the jali with stainless steel pins but also it becomes a partition, a window or simply a shaded relief on plain plaster. The white surface needs only a wipe with water to regain its original lustre.
