Description
A Capacitance Level Transmitter is an instrument used to measure the level of a substance (typically a liquid or solid) within a container based on changes in capacitance between two electrodes. Working Principle: It operates on the principle that the capacitance between two conductive plates (an electrode and the tank wall or a reference probe) changes as the level of the material between them changes. As the level rises or falls, the dielectric constant of the material between the plates changes, which alters the capacitance. This change is measured and converted into a level signal. Components: Probe (Sensor Rod): Acts as one electrode. Tank Wall or Reference Rod: Acts as the second electrode. Dielectric Material: The substance (liquid or solid) being measured. Electronics Unit: Converts the capacitance change into a readable output (e.g., 4–20 mA signal). Types: Rod Type: For conductive or non-conductive liquids. Cable Type: Suitable for tall tanks or silos. Coaxial Type: For more precise and stable measurements. Advantages: No moving parts, low maintenance. Suitable for both conductive and non-conductive materials. Can be used for interface measurement. Works in extreme conditions (temperature, pressure). Disadvantages: Accuracy affected by changes in dielectric constant. Build-up on the probe can impact measurement. Requires calibration for different materials. Applications: Oil and gas (tank level monitoring). Chemical processing. Food and beverage (silos and tanks). Water and wastewater treatment.
