Micron filters remove dirt, debris, and even microscopic particles from water. The pore size of a filter cartridge is measured in microns. The smaller the micron rating, the finer the particulate removed.The principle of micro filtration and ultra filtration is physical separation. The extent to which dissolved solids, turbidity and microrganisms are removed is determined by the size of the pores in the membranes. Substances that are larger than the pores in the membranes are fully removed.This determines the size of particles that the filter will allow to pass through. A 50 micron rated filter will allow larger particles to pass through than a 5 micron rated filter.
