Description

The primary principal behind Ring Laser Gyroscope (RLG) is known as the Sagnac effect. The Sagnac effect manifests itself in what is known as a ring interferometry setup. This setup consists of a beam of light splitting into two, following the split these two beams are projected in opposite directions, one clockwise and the other counter clockwise, resulting in a "ring". Ring laser gyroscopes operate by sensing the difference in propagation time between these two beams of light. Consequently, a rotationally induced variance in path length produces a phase difference between the two light beams. Where most other technologies would have a hard time operating, RLGs are able to perform under adverse environmental conditions.
