Elevator Overspeed Governor

The speed governor is essentially a spring cylinder pivotally supported at one end on the elevator car and attached at the other end to a fork shaped frame, which frame carries external rotatable and internal fixed concentric cylinders. The frame is also connected with the safety device by an actuating rod.An overspeed governor is one of the components of such a safety system. It acts as a stopping mechanism when the elevator car reaches an excessive velocity, known as tripping speed. When the tripping speed is reached, the overspeed governor is mechanically locked and halts the rope, thus stopping the elevator car.An elevator governor is a speed monitoring device on traction elevators that triggers a safety mounted on the car frame when the elevator reaches high speeds in either direction.
