A hydro-pneumatic cylinder is a hybrid actuator that combines the speed and convenience of a pneumatic cylinder with the high force output of a hydraulic system, utilizing compressed air as the primary energy source to drive an internal hydraulic intensifier. These self-contained, compact units are designed for applications requiring high force—such as pressing, riveting, clinching, punching, and forming—where a traditional, large hydraulic power pack is not feasible. Operating in two phases, the cylinder first uses air to rapidly advance the rod to the workpiece; upon meeting resistance, a pneumatic-hydraulic converter (or intensifier) triggers, pressurizing oil to deliver high-pressure power, typically producing forces up to 200 tons.
