Description

A pneumatic control valve is a valve whose open/close / throttling action is actuated by compressed air. It is used as a final control element in process control, to regulate flow, pressure, temperature, level etc., in response to a control signal. The valve body + internal components (trim) do the flow regulation, while a pneumatic actuator moves the valve stem or other flow‑element (plug, disc, ball, etc.) under air pressure. Sometimes there's also a positioner to ensure accurate valve plug positioning.Key Components Valve Body & Trim – the "flow path" parts: seat, plug (or disc/ball), stem etc. Determines how the fluid flows, leakage, wear etc. Actuator – Pneumatic: could be a diaphragm + spring, or piston with springs. Single‑acting (spring return) or double‑acting (air both ways). Positioner (optional but common) – receives a control signal (e.g. pneumatic, or electro‑pneumatic, or even digital) and adjusts air to the actuator so that the valve plug reaches the correct position. Helps with precision and overcoming issues like friction or changes in load. Signal Source & Control System – typically the controller sends a 3‑15 psi or 0.2‑1 bar pneumatic or 4‑20 mA electrical signal (if electro‑pneumatic) which is converted to pneumatic pressure for the actuator/positioner.
