Technical Description The "high-speed" designation in modern rapier looms is achieved through low-mass carbon fiber rapier tapes and optimized drive geometries. The process typically uses a double rapier system: The Giver: A rapier head enters from one side, carrying the weft yarn to the center of the loom. The Taker: A second rapier enters from the opposite side. At the midpoint, they meet in a "handshake" maneuver where the yarn is transferred with millimeter precision. The Return: Both rapiers retract, and the reed beats the yarn into the fabric. By using lightweight materials and asymmetrical drive wheels, these machines can reach speeds of 600 to 800 picks per minute (PPM). While slower than air-jets, they produce far less waste (smaller selvages) and can produce complex "fancy" fabrics that jet looms simply cannot handle.
