Anti-scale agents (also known as scale inhibitors – Antiscalant) are used to minimize the possibility of scale build-up on the surface of the RO membrane. It is widely used to avoid scaling by salts such as silica, iron, barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, gypsum, etc., especially those that cause water hardness.Antiscalant is a pretreatment water additive for reverse osmosis system that is highly effective in preventing the membranes from scaling. Before the feed water enters the reverse osmosis membrane, an antiscalant is injected into the water and sent the through the system.Scaling means the deposition of particles on a membrane, causing it to plug. It is an unwanted effect that can occur during nano filtration and Reverse Osmosis processes. Scaling causes a higher energy use and a shorter life span of the membranes, because these will need cleaning more often.
