Rotogravure (or gravure for short) is a type of intaglio printing process, which involves engraving the image onto an image carrier.The modern day rotogravure printing press uses a printing cylinder which has been laser engraved with minute cells capable of retaining ink, the size and pattern of which reflect the required image.In the photogravure or rotogravure (rotary photogravure) process, a negative image is etched into the surface of a copper printing cylinder in tiny cells and dots of various sizes and various depths. These constitute the type characters and artwork with its tonal gradations.Gravure printing works on the principle of intaglio printing, which means that the printed elements will be engraved into the metal surface. When the ink is brought to the surface of the printing plate, it then spills into the depressions of the printed elements.
