Description

Stainless steel conduit (often referred to as SS conduit hose or flexible armor) is the premier solution for protecting electrical wiring and sensitive cables in environments where plastic or galvanized steel would fail. Unlike the high-pressure flexible hoses used for fluids, these are designed for mechanical protection, EMI shielding, and extreme temperature resistance. The way the stainless steel strip is wound determines the hose's strength and flexibility. Square-Lock (Single-Lock): The metal strip is folded over itself once. This type is highly flexible and cost-effective, making it ideal for tight spaces and "lazy" bends where high tension isn't a factor. Interlock (Double-Lock): The edges of the metal strip are completely hooked together. This provides much higher "crush resistance" and prevents the hose from pulling apart under tension. It is the standard for heavy-duty industrial sensors and fiber optic protection. While both look identical, their chemical makeup determines where they should be used. Feature SS 304 (Standard) SS 316 (Marine/Chemical) Composition 18% Chromium, 8% Nickel Adds 2% Molybdenum Best For Food & Beverage, General Industrial Marine, Coastal, Highly Acidic areas Corrosion Excellent for moisture/oxidation Superior resistance to chlorides (salt) Cost More economical Typically 30%–50% more expensive Temperature Range: Bare SS conduit can handle extreme swings from -100°C to +600°C ($+750$°C for short bursts). IP Ratings (Ingress Protection): IP40: Standard unjacketed conduit (protects against tools/wires but not water). IP67/68: Achieved when the SS conduit has a PVC or Silicone jacket and is used with "liquid-tight" fittings. EMI/RFI Shielding: The metal structure naturally acts as a "Faraday cage," protecting signal cables from electromagnetic interference—critical for precision instrumentation. If the environment involves liquids or requires high hygiene, a "bare" hose isn't enough. PVC Coated: The most common. It makes the conduit "liquid-tight" and protects against oils and greases. Silicone Coated: Used for high-heat areas (up to $250$°C) where PVC would melt. It is also common in "cleanroom" environments because it doesn't outgas. SS Over-Braided: A standard conduit covered in an extra layer of stainless steel braid. This adds a "second skin" of protection against hot metal sparks (welding) and abrasion.
