Description
Stainless steel flexible hoses (often called SS Flex Hoses) are the heavy-duty alternative to rubber or plastic. They are used when conditions are too "aggressive" for standard materials—specifically when dealing with extreme temperatures, high vacuum, or highly corrosive chemicals.
A typical assembly consists of two main parts working together:
The Corrugated Inner Tube: A thin-walled stainless steel tube (usually 304, 316L, or 321 grade) that is "convoluted" (crimped into ridges). This provides the flexibility and leak-tightness. The Outer Braiding: One or two layers of stainless steel wire mesh woven over the tube. The "Braid" Role: The inner tube would stretch like a balloon under pressure; the braid acts as a "straitjacket," preventing elongation and allowing the hose to handle high pressure.

Cryogenics: Because stainless steel doesn't become brittle in extreme cold, these are the standard for transporting liquid nitrogen or oxygen. Vacuum Systems: Unlike rubber hoses, which can collapse under a vacuum, the corrugated metal structure holds its shape perfectly.
Metal hoses are durable but have "kryptonites" that can cause instant failure:
Torsion (Twisting): Never twist a metal hose during installation. If the braid is twisted, the pressure will be unevenly distributed, and the hose will rupture prematurely. Always use two wrenches when tightening. Minimum Bend Radius: Every hose has a rated "Minimum Bend Radius." Bending it sharper than this will cause the metal corrugations to fatigue and crack. Avoid "Out-of-Plane" Flexing: The hose should only flex in a single plane (like a hinge). "S-curves" or twisting motions during operation will significantly shorten its life.
304 Stainless: Standard for water, air, and mild environments. 316L Stainless: The "Marine Grade." Essential for saltwater, chlorine, or highly corrosive chemical processing. It contains Molybdenum, which prevents pitting corrosion.
