Description

ER312 is a high-ferrite stainless steel welding wire (also available as a rod) that offers excellent strength, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature performance. It is primarily used for joining dissimilar metals, such as carbon steel to stainless steel, and for overlaying surfaces that experience wear, erosion, or abrasion. The "ER" in its name signifies it can be used as an electrode or a rod in welding processes like TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), and others, though its high ferrite content typically requires limiting its use to two or three weld layers when joining similar cast alloys. Key Characteristics & Benefits High Strength:ER312 produces weld deposits with very high tensile strength, making it ideal for structural applications. Dissimilar Metal Welding:It excels at joining difficult-to-weld materials and dissimilar metals, including carbon steel and various stainless and alloy steels. Wear & Corrosion Resistance:The alloy provides good resistance to both corrosion and wear, especially at higher temperatures. Good Toughness:ER312 exhibits good toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures, and maintains strength at high service temperatures. High Ferrite Content:The very high ferrite content contributes to its crack resistance and strength but necessitates careful application, especially when welding similar cast alloys. Common Applications Overlaying:Used to build up surfaces subject to abrasion, erosion, and high temperatures. Joining Difficult Materials:Suitable for welding difficult-to-weld steels, such as leaf springs, gear teeth, and forged shafts. Repair Work:Effective for repairing earth-moving equipment and machine parts. Clad Steel:Used for welding AISI 304 clad stainless steel. Welding Considerations Layer Limitation:When welding similar cast alloys, the use of ER312 should generally be limited to two or three weld layers to avoid excessive ferrite. Process Compatibility:It is compatible with both Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW or TIG) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW or MIG).
