Tensile refers to a type of external physical force applied to a material in a pulling direction away from its surface. Tensile typically refers to tensile strength or tensile stress.Tensile force is the stretching forces acting on the material and has two components namely, tensile stress and tensile strain. This means that the material experiencing the force is under tension and the forces are trying to stretch it.Tensile stress measures the strength of a material; therefore, it refers to a force that attempts to pull apart or stretch a material. Many mechanical properties of a material can be determined by a tensile test. Tensile stress may also be known as normal stress or tension.
