A thickness planer is a woodworking machine to trim boards to a consistent thickness throughout their length and flat on both surfaces. It is different from a surface planer, or jointer, where the cutter head is set into the bed surface. A hand planer can pare off just a thin slice of wood, no tool is better for shaving the edge of a sticking door, chamfering the corner of a board, or straightening one that is twisted or warped. That's why most carpenters still pack a hand plane or two in their toolboxes.The reciprocating motion of the ram is obtained by a quick return motion mechanism. As the ram reciprocates, the tool cuts the material during its forward stroke. In return stroke, there is no cutting action and this stroke is called the idle stroke.
