Description
The production of toilet soaps usually entails saponification of triglycerides, which are vegetable or animal oils and fats. An alkaline solution (often lye or sodium hydroxide) induces saponification whereby the triglyceride fats first hydrolyze into salts of fatty acids. Glycerol (glycerin) is liberated. Some of them play the role of lubricant. Toilet soap is made for cleaning skin while laundry soap is made for cleaning clothes and shoes. The main difference between toilet soap and a bathing bar is that the former comes with better cleansing and moisturising properties, Purified waste cooking oils and beef tallow is mixed with coconut oil commonly used oil in toilet soap manufacturing. The oils are normally mixed at different ratios for the preparation of toilet soap. The triglycerides in the vegetable oils and beef tallow are saponified with Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) by hydrolysis. The most important factor to be considered in soap quality is its total fatty matter (TFM). Higher the TFM quantity in the soap, better is its quality. As per BIS, Grade 1 soaps should have 76 per cent minimum TFM, while Grade 2 and Grade 3 must have 70 per cent and 60 per cent minimum TFM, respectively. In general, there are four methods to make soap - cold process, melt and pour, hot process, and rebatch. There are pros and cons for each, and every maker has a personal preference.
