Total stations are the primary survey instrument used in mining surveying. A total station is used to record the absolute location of the tunnel walls, ceilings (backs), and floors as the drifts of an underground mine are driven.A total station is a device used by surveying experts to map heights and distances. It consists of a telescope, Vernier scales, and a coordinate system that helps in calculating the relative vertical location. The most common types used are the company's brand total stations, transit total stations, and handheld ones.The basic principle of the total station is that the distance between any two points can be known once the velocity and the time taken by the light to travel are known.Initially, Total Station was a proper noun introduced by Hewlett-Packard (HP) to promote its Model 3810A around 1975. Probably because of its tunefulness to the ear, surveyors soon applied the term to all theodolites with a built-in EDM unit and total station became a common noun, written without capital letters.
