Scroll chucks have jaws that move together, in and out radially. Universal chucks have jaws that move together, toward or away from the center (i.e., self-, concentric). Vacuum chucks apply a vacuum to the back of the workpiece to achieve chucking or holding action.A chuck is a specialized type of clamp used to hold an object with radial symmetry, especially a cylinder. In a drill, a mill and a transmission, a chuck holds the rotating tool; in a lathe, it holds the rotating workpiece. Rotating the chuck collar in a counterclockwise direction will loosen the tool. Hybrid drill chucks are engineered with both keyed and systems. The portion automatically tightens, while the keyed portion is adjusted on the chuck to offer added gripping and torque support on the tool.
