A road roller (sometimes called a roller-compactor, or just roller) is a compactor-type engineering vehicle used to compact soil, gravel, concrete, or asphalt in the construction of roads and foundations. Similar rollers are used also at landfills or in agriculture.The roller is an agricultural tool used for flattening land or breaking up large clumps of soil, especially after ploughing or disc harrowing. Typically, rollers are pulled by tractors or, prior to mechanisation, a team of animals such as horses or oxen.Grid rollers models have a cylindrical heavy steel surface comprising a network of steel bars that form a grid with square-shaped holes. It is common for the roller to be ballasted with concrete blocks. This type of roller is generally a towed unit and provides high contact pressure but minimal kneading action.
