The cleaning process seeks to get rid of the contaminants present in the seeds by eliminating any unwanted substances and retaining only the harvested seeds. The separation process further screens the cleaned seeds to remove the bad seeds that are considered unwholesome.Screening or sieving to separate good quality wheat from foreign grains, sand, stones and many other types of course and fine impurities has been the principal method of cleaning wheat from the beginning of flour milling history.Grain cleaning will improve the drying, the storability of grain, reduce dockage at time of milling, and improve milling output and quality; while, seed cleaning will reduce damage by disease, and improve yields.First cleaning of wheat is necessary to remove all unwanted impurities like surface dust, ferrous material; sand, stones, lighter material, shrivelled wheat, broken wheat, barley, oats, other grains etc., and prepare wheat for milling. During first cleaning operations, about 1.5- 2.5 % of impurities will be separated.Cleaning process aims to protect the milling equipment, the quality of the milling products and the consumer health. Foreign substance content and level of contamination in the milled wheat batch are very important in achieving good quality in flour.
