The word "wingnut" has two distinct meanings. The primary meaning refers to a type of nut with flat, wing-like projections for easy tightening by hand, also known as a butterfly nut. In a less common, informal, and often derogatory sense, "wingnut" is used to describe a person with extreme or eccentric political views, particularly on the far right.
